Telmo Rodríquez is a Spanish winery founded in 1994. It has earned a worldwide reputation as a pioneer championing Spanish winemaking, a travelling oenologist and "driving wine-maker". This reputation comes above all from the fact that he travels to wine regions to produce single-harvest wines using only the native varieties of the given area. He also devotes special care to reviving forgotten vineyards. The Telmo Rodríquez brand reflects an immense love of wine and fine winemaking craft.
The Telmo Rodríguez Gago wine is an iconic red wine from the Toro appellation in Spain, representing one of the most characteristic expressions of the local terroir and the old vineyards the Telmo Rodríguez family has worked with since 1998. This wine is the result of a careful selection of 21 plots of old bush vines, which together create a wine with depth, harmony and a clear expression of the soil.
Grape variety: The wine is composed predominantly of Tinta de Toro with a traditional addition of Albiño Mayor, which gives the wine richness, structure and the region's typical character.
Vineyard: The grapes come from long-standing partners in the villages of Argujillo, Villabuena and Morales in D.O. Toro, where sandstone and gravel soils with low organic content give the wine a mineral, terroir-driven character. The vines are low-density and bush-trained, which supports concentrated aromatic expression.
Production and ageing: After hand-harvesting, the grapes are fermented in wooden and stainless steel tanks, and the wine is then aged for approximately 14 months, mostly in large oak foudres (80%) and the remainder in barrique barrels (20%), giving the wine structure, depth and harmonious integration of oak.
Taste and aroma: On the palate, the wine has a full body with rich aromas of dark fruit (blackcurrant, plums), delicate spicy and woody nuances, hints of mineral depth and firm yet elegant tannins. The structure is balanced, with good acidity and a long, complex finish that reflects both the power and elegance of the Toro vineyards.
Food pairing: Recommended serving temperature is around 16–18 °C. The wine pairs excellently with braised and roasted meats, grilled steak, game or stronger cheeses, highlighting its fruitiness and structure.
