Telmo Rodríquez is a Spanish winery founded in 1994. Around the world it has a reputation as a pioneer supporting Spanish winemaking, a travelling oenologist and a "driving wine-maker". It earned this reputation above all by travelling to individual regions to make wines from a single harvest using only the region's native varieties. It also devotes special care to restoring forgotten vineyards. The Telmo Rodríquez brand reflects an immense love of wine and fine winemaking craft.
Pegaso Pizarra is a complex and terroir-driven red wine from the Sierra de Gredos region (the village of Cebreros, Ávila) in Spain, made from a selection of old bush-vine Garnacha, grown in a traditional, organic way.
The vineyards for this cuvée grow on metamorphic soils of sandstone slate ("pizarra") at altitudes of around 950 to 1,200 metres above sea level, mostly facing east, which gives the wine depth, power and mineral character and makes it exceptional even among other wines from Gredos.
Grape variety: 100% Garnacha from very old bush vines on the demanding slopes of sandy soil - this gives the wine a rich and lively fruit profile with mineral and spicy elements.
Production and ageing: Fermentation takes place with native yeasts, followed by ageing of 24–30 months in French oak barrels of 400 and 500 litres from various forests and origins, giving the wine structure and complexity without excessive woody tones.
Taste and aroma: In both taste and aroma, Pegaso Pizarra offers intense fruitiness of red and dark berries, complemented by pronounced mineral and herbal nuances, often with hints of thyme, rosemary and lavender, which underline the terroir of the sandy soils. The wine has a fuller body, balanced acidity and firm yet elegant tannins with a long, harmonious finish.
Food pairing: The recommended serving temperature is 16–18 °C. Pegaso Pizarra pairs excellently with grilled and roasted red meat, game, stewed ragout dishes and more robust cheeses, where its fruit concentration and mineral undertone beautifully complement intense flavours.
