Gin is the most varied category among the spirits, represented by the traditional Menorcan Xoriguer Mahón, the flavoured and barrel-aged Siderit gins from Cantabria, Macaronesian Gin from the Canary Islands and the fruity Santamanía Lola y Vera Strawberry. Gins differ in their botanicals (herbs, spices, fruit) and in the way they are made - from a classic recipe to unconventional flavouring or maturing in used sherry casks. The choice of gin is guided mainly by whether you want to drink it in a gin & tonic or to taste it on its own.

How to find your way around this category

Classic regional gin (Xoriguer Mahón, Macaronesian Gin) has balanced botanicals and works universally in a gin & tonic and in cocktails. Flavoured gins (Ginger-Lime, Hibiscus, Strawberry) add a pronounced fruity or spiced accent, better suited to summer drinks. Barrel-aged gins (Reserva Sherry Cask) have an amber colour and a more complex flavour closer to whisky.

For a classic gin & tonic choose a traditional or lightly flavoured gin, for tasting the spirit on its own rather a barrel-aged variant.

Gin de Mahón - a regional speciality

Xoriguer Mahón is made on Menorca to a recipe going back to the 18th century, when the island was influenced by the British presence. It is distilled in old copper stills and part of the production matures in oak casks, which gives it a slightly golden tint. It is one of the few gins with their own protected regional identity in Spain.

Barrel-aged and regional gins may have a different colour from classic clear gin - this is not a defect but a deliberate production style.

Frequently asked questions

What is Gin de Mahón?
A gin made on the island of Menorca to a traditional recipe going back to the 18th century, distilled in old copper stills. Xoriguer is its best-known representative.
How is gin served with tonic?
The classic ratio is roughly 1 part gin to 2-3 parts tonic, with plenty of ice and a slice of citrus or a herb chosen according to the botanicals of the particular gin.
Why does barrel-aged gin have a different colour?
The gin acquires its colour and part of its flavour during maturing in a wooden cask, which releases tannin and aromatic substances from the wood - with Siderit Reserva this is specifically a used sherry cask.
How long does an opened bottle of gin keep?
Thanks to its high alcohol content, gin practically does not degrade after opening and can be stored at room temperature for many months or even years.
Which gin should I choose for a summer drink?
Fruity and spiced variants such as Ginger-Lime or Strawberry are suited to summer cocktails, where their pronounced flavour complements tonic or lemonade well.
