Amaren, Angeles de Amaren, D.O. Rioja, red wine, 0.75l

The wine is named after the founder's mother, Ángeles, and pays tribute to her lifelong passion for viticulture. "Amaren" means "of the mother" in Basque. The first named cuvée was created back in 1995, and in 2009 the family's winemaking vision grew into the independent project Bodegas Amaren, whose most personal chapter is this very wine. It is a symbol of the connection between family roots, terroir and the pursuit of perfection.

Grape variety: 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano

The vineyards are more than 55 years old and lie at an altitude of 450–600 m in the Rioja Alavesa region, on poor limestone-clay soils.

Production and ageing: The grapes are hand-picked, transported in small crates and subjected to a double selection to preserve their purity and quality. Fermentation takes place separately for Tempranillo (in concrete tanks) and Graciano (in oak vats) to preserve the character of each variety. The wine then ages for 15–16 months, of which about 10% is in a concrete "tulip" tank and the rest in barrels (both new and used) of French, American and Hungarian oak.

Taste and aroma: It has a deep red, almost opaque colour. The nose opens with a rich fruity continuum of ripe cherries and plums, gently complemented by a spicy hint, herbs and a touch of toasted bread. On the palate it is distinctly full, seductive, with smooth tannins, balanced acidity and a long, fruity-mineral finish.

Food pairing: This wine pairs wonderfully with a whole range of dishes. From charcuterie, Iberian hams to red meat, game, mushrooms and even some spicy dishes. We recommend serving at a temperature of 16–18 °C.
