Telmo Rodríquez is a Spanish winery founded in 1994. Around the world it has a reputation as a pioneer supporting Spanish winemaking, a travelling oenologist and a "driving wine-maker". It earned this reputation above all by travelling to individual regions to make wines from a single harvest using only the region's native varieties. It also devotes special care to restoring forgotten vineyards. The Telmo Rodríquez brand reflects an immense love of wine and fine winemaking craft.
Telmo Rodríguez Gaba do Xil Mencía is an expressive red wine from the Valdeorras region in north-western Spain (Galicia), where terroir with Atlantic influence and soils of sandstone and slate metamorphic rock give this wine its fresh, mineral character. This wine from Telmo Rodríguez represents a pure and lively expression of the Mencía variety from vineyards spread across villages such as Larouco and Santa Cruz, with careful grape selection and traditional production methods.
Grape variety: 100% Mencía, a native red variety typical of north-western Spain, giving the wine fresh fruity and herbal tones with a mineral thread.
Vineyard: The grapes come from traditional vineyards in the easternmost part of D.O. Valdeorras (Santa Cruz, Las Ermitas and Larouco), at altitudes of around 400–500 m above sea level. The terrain with its sandstone and slate soils contributes to the wine's pronounced terroir expression.
Production and ageing: After hand harvesting, the grapes are fermented using native yeasts and then age for approximately 12 months in stainless steel tanks without the use of oak, to preserve the pure fruit and terroir character.
Taste and aroma: The wine has a bright ruby colour, and its taste and aroma are dominated by fresh red fruit, delicate herbs, minerality and light spicy nuances. On the palate it is fresh and medium-bodied, with balanced acidity and fine tannins, leading to a long and energetic finish.
Food pairing: Recommended serving temperature 14–16 °C. It goes excellently with red meat, game, grilled dishes, but also cheese boards or tapas with charcuterie.
