Alzania Gardacho is a lively and expressive red wine from D.O. Navarra, made from 100% Garnacha from vines 60–80 years old. The vineyards lie at higher altitudes with clay-limestone soils, where a continental climate with warm days and cool nights supports slow ripening of the grapes and preservation of pure fruit character.
The wine is characterised by aromas of ripe red fruit, cherries and raspberries, complemented by delicate spicy and mineral notes, and on the palate it is lively, harmonious, with pleasant acidity and fine tannins.
It is ideal with grilled meat, roast lamb or tapas, but also makes a great aperitif on its own.
Grape variety:
Alzania Gardacho is a red wine made as a single-variety wine from Garnacha, typical of the Navarra region. Garnacha gives the wine a pronounced fruity character, fine tannins and a medium-full structure, which allows a harmonious combination of freshness and body.
Vineyard:
The grapes come from older vineyards aged 60–80 years, where the vines grow on clay-limestone soils with mineral traces, typical of Tierra Estella in D.O. Navarra. The vineyards lie at higher altitudes, approximately 500–550 m above sea level, where a continental climate with warm days and cool nights supports slow ripening of the grapes and preservation of aromatic purity. The name "Gardacho" refers to a small lizard (lagarto) that often crawled over the vines, giving the wine a playful and lively character.
Production and ageing:
The grapes are processed carefully by hand, fermentation takes place separately, and the wine ages 10–12 months in oak barrels of various types, which gives it a delicate woody structure, harmony and complexity, without suppressing the fresh fruity notes.
Aroma and taste:
The aroma features red fruit, especially cherries and raspberries, complemented by delicate spicy and mineral notes that reflect the terroir of the vineyards. On the palate the wine is lively, fresh and "cheerful", with pleasant acidity, fine tannins and a medium-long finish that underlines the harmony between fruitiness and structure.
Food pairing:
Thanks to its freshness and lively fruity character, Gardacho pairs excellently with grilled meat, roast lamb, tapas and Mediterranean dishes, but also works as an aperitif on its own. The recommended serving temperature is 14–16°C.
