Suertes del Marqués, Candio, D.O. Valle de Orotava, red wine, 0.75l

Not rated

Candio 2014 from the Suertes del Marqués winery comes from the Valle de Orotava region on the island of Tenerife and is made from 100% Listán Negro from ungrafted, own-rooted vineyards on volcanic slopes.
The wine ferments in open concrete vessels and then ages 16 months in French oak barrels, giving it elegance and depth.
In the aromatics, notes of cherry, raspberry and dark fruit blend with delicate spice, a hint of smoke, minerality and a light touch of wood. On the palate it is harmonious, with fresh acidity, delicate tannins and a longer, balanced finish, making it a wonderful match for red meats, steaks or mature cheeses.

Grape variety:
Candio 2014 is made from 100% Listán Negro, a traditional indigenous variety from Tenerife, known for its elegance, freshness and ability to express the local terroir.

Vineyard:
The grapes come from vineyards in the Valle de Orotava area, where the vines are grown on steep slopes with volcanic subsoil. The vineyards are own-rooted (ungrafted), which is very rare in Europe following the phylloxera epidemic. The vines are trained using the unique historical system known as "cordón trenzado", or braided cordon, which is typical of Tenerife and contributes to low yields and high-quality grapes.

Production:
Fermentation takes place in open concrete vessels using indigenous yeasts. The wine then ages 16 months in 500-litre French oak barrels, with 50% of the barrels new and 50% used (second year). At the Suertes del Marqués winery, emphasis is placed on minimal intervention, so as to preserve the authentic character of both the wine and the variety.

Aroma and taste:
Both in aroma and taste the wine is distinctly layered. Notes of ripe cherries, raspberries and forest fruit dominate, gradually moving into deeper registers of blackcurrant and plums. These fruity components are complemented by delicate spicy nuances, hints of pepper, dried herbs and a light touch of smoke and volcanic minerality typical of the local soils. Ageing in oak brings elegant notes of cedar, cocoa and wood, which are, however, very well integrated and do not overpower the wine's fruity character. On the palate the wine is harmonious, with a medium-full body, fresh acidity, finely structured tannins and a long, mineral-spicy finish.

Food pairing:
Candio 2014 pairs wonderfully with more robust dishes, such as beef steaks, red meats, game, mature cheeses or dishes with intense sauces. It is recommended to serve at a temperature around 16°C, so that its aromatic and flavour profile can fully develop.
