The wine Arrocal Village "Gumiel de Mercado" comes from the family winery Bodegas Arrocal, located in the village of Gumiel de Mercado in the province of Burgos, in the heart of the Spanish wine region D.O. Ribera del Duero.
The winery is run by Rosa Arroyo and Moisés Calvo, who place emphasis on sustainable, careful winemaking, combining modern technology with traditional methods. The wines are made in a natural way, with minimal intervention and respect for the soil and the raw materials.
Awards: 93 points – Robert Parker
Grape variety: 90% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), complemented by 5% Garnacha (Grenache) and 5% of the local white variety Albillo Mayor
Vineyard: The vineyards lie at an altitude of 830–900 metres and have a varied soil composition, ranging from clay through limestone to sand and gravel, which gives the wine complexity, freshness and a mineral character. In total the winery farms around 85 hectares, part of which is planted with vines more than 80 years old. All the vineyards were certified organic in 2023 and are cultivated in the traditional way with an emphasis on sustainability. This terroir and approach to viticulture is clearly reflected in the style of the wine — clean, fresh, elegant, and a faithful expression of its place of origin.
Production and ageing: Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, which preserves the wine's pure fruit expression. The wine then ages for approximately 12 months in used French oak barrels, which lend it finesse and complexity without overpowering its fruity character.
Taste and aroma: On the palate the wine is juicy, fresh and elegant. It offers notes of red cherry, raspberry and strawberry, complemented by delicate floral, herbal and spicy nuances. The finish reveals a subtle hint of wood and spice. The body is medium to full, the tannins are soft and well integrated, with a clean, balanced expression.
Food pairing: The wine is best served at a temperature of around 14–16 °C. It goes wonderfully with tapas, Mediterranean dishes, grilled vegetables, pasta with tomato sauce, or lightly spiced meat dishes. It also pairs well with medium-matured cheeses or Spanish cured meats.
