Awards for the 2020 vintage:
94 points – Robert Parker
94 points – James Suckling
94 points – Peñín
Grape variety: 100% Tempranillo, sometimes with a small proportion of Garnacha and Graciano from some plots to enhance freshness.
Vineyard: The wine comes from 100 ha of vineyards, with an average vine age of 40 years, planted at a high density of 3,333 vines/ha. The vineyards lie at an altitude of 500 m and the soils are gravelly, clay-limestone, giving the grapes a mineral component and fruity freshness. The grapes are hand-harvested in small 12kg boxes between 13 and 30 September 2020.
Production and ageing: After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels and tanks. The wine ages 15 months in French oak barrels, mostly new, first-fill, and then rests for several months in bottle. This process gives the wine depth, structure and at the same time preserves freshness and fruitiness.
Taste and aroma: The wine has an intense dark red colour and a complex aromatic profile. On the nose it offers pronounced notes of dark fruit (blackberries, plums), complemented by delicate nuances of spice, cedar, cocoa and touches of minerality. On the palate it is full and firm, with an elegant tannin structure and pronounced acidity that gives the wine freshness and long-term ageing potential. The texture is powerful yet elegant, making this wine a harmonious interplay of fruitiness, oak and terroir elements.
Food pairing: The recommended serving temperature is 18 °C. This wine pairs excellently with more intense dishes, such as red meat, roast beef, lamb chops, game or medium-to-full-flavoured cheese. Thanks to its structure, freshness and complex flavour profile, it can also be a great partner for richer Mediterranean dishes or braised meat.
