D.O. Rioja/José Gil, La Canoca 0.75l
La Canoca is a bold red wine from the Rioja region by winemaker José Gil, coming from a small, old vineyard in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Made mainly from Tempranillo with a small proportion of Viura, it ages 11 months in French oak barrels, gaining a complex fruity aroma, elegant structure and fine tannins.
On the palate it is harmonious with a long finish that faithfully reflects the terroir and the precise work of the winemaker. It pairs perfectly with grilled meat, lamb or mature cheeses such as Manchego Añejo or Zamorano.

La Canoca is a bold red wine from the Rioja region by young winemaker José Gil, coming from a small, approximately 0.5 ha vineyard in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra with vines around 45–50 years old, dominated by Tempranillo with a small proportion of Viura on limestone-clay soils at an altitude of around 680 m above sea level. Thanks to hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and ageing 11 months in 500 l French oak barrels, the wine has a rich and complex character that combines an intense fruity aroma with an elegant structure and fine tannins, making it one of the most interesting "single-plot" wines of the José Gil project.
Awards: The wine La Canoca received excellent ratings from critics.
96 points - Tim Atkin
96 points - The Wine Advocate for the 2023 vintage, placing it among the most sought-after and highest-rated red Rioja wines of the young generation of winemakers.
Grape variety: La Canoca is made mainly from Tempranillo with a small proportion of Viura, which gives the wine a deep fruity profile, freshness and an elegant structure with a distinctive terroir signature.
Ageing: After hand harvesting and destemming, fermentation takes place with local yeasts and the wine then ages 11 months in 500 l French oak barrels, gaining complexity, depth and a smooth structure without the wood becoming too dominant.
Vineyard: The grapes come from the small La Canoca vineyard in San Vicente de la Sonsierra on limestone-clay soils at a higher altitude, where older bush vines give an intense fruity aroma, firm structure and mineral character that is clearly present in every bottle.
Tasting notes: The colour is intense ruby, the aroma is complex with notes of dark and red fruit, complemented by delicate floral and mineral nuances, and the taste is elegant, well structured with fine tannins and a long, harmonious finish that underlines the terroir and the precise work of the winemaker.
Food pairing: Thanks to its depth, structured tannins and fruity profile, La Canoca pairs excellently with grilled red meat, roast lamb, stewed dishes and mature cheeses, where it can complement rich flavours.
