Kalamity Blanco is an exceptional white wine from the Oxer Wines winery, one of the most respected projects in the D.O.C. Rioja region. It is produced in limited quantities and represents a modern, complex take on Rioja white wines, with a pronounced terroir character and longevity.

Grape variety: A unique blend of traditional white varieties from the Rioja region, mainly Viura and Garnacha Blanca, giving rise to a wine with pronounced structure, minerality and aromatic depth. Kalamity Blanco is a wine for lovers of serious, layered white wines with ageing potential.

Vineyard: The grapes come from old vineyards in the subregions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, situated at an altitude of around 580–600 m above sea level. The vineyards are characterised by clay-limestone soils, which give the wine a mineral character, freshness and elegance. Low yields and the old age of the vines contribute to the concentration and complexity of the resulting wine.

Ageing: The grapes from individual plots are vinified separately, with an emphasis on terroir. Fermentation takes place using local yeasts, part of the wine ages in concrete vessels and French oak barrels, giving the wine structure, finesse and the ability to further develop in the bottle. After ageing, the final blending takes place.

Tasting notes: Kalamity Blanco is very complex on the nose. It offers notes of ripe white fruit, citrus peel, flowers, herbs and delicate spice, complemented by mineral and lightly smoky nuances. The taste is full, structured and mineral, with a lively acidity, a fine creaminess and a long, elegant finish. The wine feels serious, harmonious and has a pronounced ageing potential.

Food pairing: Serve the wine at a temperature of 12–14 °C; for more complex vintages a short decanting is advisable. It pairs wonderfully with fish, seafood, creamy sauces, white meat, as well as mature cheeses, mushroom dishes or modern Mediterranean cuisine. Also excellent as a food wine to accompany an entire menu.

The name Kalamity and its distinctive label were inspired by winemaker Oxer Bastegieta's love of literature, specifically Shakespeare's phrase "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Shame on him who thinks evil of it), which comes from the play "The Reign of King Edward the Third". The wine is the result of this inspiration, being very rich in flavour, aromatically complex and with the potential to age beautifully, despite its relatively energetic and lively character at a young age.
Kalamity Blanco is proof that Rioja isn't just about red wines - it's an original, deep and long-lived white wine that pushes the boundaries of how the region is traditionally perceived.
