Oxer Bastegieta, Kuusu, Castilla y León, red wine, 0.75l

Kuusu takes us back to Oxer's childhood, when as a young boy he tasted his first wine. A wine from Toro. To this day he vividly remembers its violet aroma. Now, more than 30 years later, he has the opportunity to make his own wine in the region where the seed of his winemaking journey was sown. The 0.9 ha vineyard is located in Villabuena del Puente at an altitude of over 600 metres and dates back to 1920. It has sandy soil with a high silica content and gives low yields of 2000 kg per hectare. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, foudres and concrete eggs using local yeasts. The wine ages for approximately 13 months in foudre. Kuusu is a very powerful wine. You will be struck by its freshness and slightly chalky tannin texture. The taste of blackcurrant, black cherries and rose petals blends with tones of bitter chocolate and liquorice, cut through by chilli spiciness and piquant notes. Everything leads to a long, concentrated finish. It should be served at a temperature of 14-16°C. We recommend enjoying it with red meat. Kuusu is the Basque name for a scarecrow, the Basque bogeyman in Toro, who wards off evil spirits. The back label quotes John Keats: "The poetry of earth is never dead."
