Toro de Albalá, Don P.X. Selección 1973, D.O. Montilla Moriles, sherry, 0.75l

Brand: Toro Albalá
The unique wine Don PX Selección 1973 comes from the Córdoba hillsides of the Toro Albalá winery. The vineyards where the wine used to be grown can no longer be found today – they were very soft, clay-like soils. This wine boasts a concentrated, round flavour with an oily structure that fills the mouth. The aroma of orange peel is overlaid with notes of banana, molasses, liquorice, caramel and honey. On the palate, sweet and spicy flavours mingle, underscored by an essence of coffee and vanilla. The wine has a long caramel and honey finish. Only 16,000 litres of this wine were produced.

Don PX Selección 1973 is a new range of sherry wines, much more approachable than the older Convento or Convento Selección ranges. On the palate it is a little lighter and its sugar content is somewhat lower – approximately 320 grams per litre.  The wine was awarded a platinum medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards for the best Spanish fortified wine of 2017. The renowned wine expert Robert Parker awarded it 95 points. The wine comes from the Montilla-Moriles region, a cousin of the better-known Jerez region. It may be less well known to the general public, but both regions have a great winemaking tradition, producing wines of similar quality using similar methods. The Montilla-Moriles region is typified by the Pedro Ximénez variety, which is used to make both dry and sweet wines. Wines here age in American oak barrels using the "soleras y criaderas" system. The Toro Albalá company was born in 1922 in the heart of the Córdoba countryside. Its history was begun by a small farmer, José María Toro Albalá, who came up with the brilliant idea of ageing old wines to create winemaking gems that would satisfy the most discerning palates. Later generations continued his work and passion, and so, through careful craftsmanship and love for the trade, first-class wines are created that are served in the best restaurants in the world.
