The brothers Roberto and Francisco Martínez Sopeña launched Cider el Gobernador in 1993. Since then, the winery has grown, innovated and diversified its production, while maintaining an identity closely tied to its territory. The history of Cider El Gobernador begins in 1993, when the brothers Roberto and Francisco Martínez Sopeña, aged 27 and 26, decided to bring to life an idea that had been taking shape for some time. The venture was quite risky given the enormous tradition of, and respect for, the cider sector felt in Asturias. But the Martínez Sopeña brothers were no beginners, since from a young age they had run, together with their family, the well-known cider mill El Faraón in Villaviciosa. This gave them a broader view of the world of cider and was a key factor in the rapid growth of the company, which today is one of the highest-volume cider presses in Asturias. They started out producing the natural cider El Gobernador, which gave the winery its name. Over time, through innovation and cooperation with the Regulatory Council of the CHOP Sidra de Asturias, they have continued developing new products to this day, in which, besides the aforementioned El Gobernador cider, they produce the ciders Sopeña (a traditional natural cider under the CHOP of Asturias), Españar (a new expression of natural cider under the DOP Cider of Asturias), Emilio Martínez Brut Nature (a natural sparkling cider under the DOP Sidra of Asturias) and Hibernis (an ice cider), as well as the vinegar Llagar de Oles .
