El Nogal is remarkable above all for its origin from a single vineyard over 80 years old, its low yields and precise barrel ageing, which gives the wine complexity and character without losing elegance. Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal 2019 comes from the iconic family winery Pago de los Capellanes, based in the village of Pedrosa de Duero in the province of Burgos, in the very heart of the Spanish wine region of D.O. Ribera del Duero. El Nogal is the winery's flagship wine and represents the pinnacle of their work with terroir, old vineyards and precise barrel ageing.
The 2019 vintage is considered very high-quality to exceptional in Ribera del Duero. The growing season was balanced, with plenty of sunny days and cooler nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The wine is characterised by great concentration, depth, an elegant structure and excellent potential for long-term ageing.
Grape variety: 100% Tempranillo
Vineyard: The wine comes from the single, carefully selected El Nogal vineyard, planted with vines over 80 years old. The vineyard is located at an altitude of around 840 metres above sea level, on clay-limestone soils with a high proportion of stone, which give the wine remarkable structure, minerality and depth. Low yields are key to its concentration and complexity.
Production and ageing: After hand harvesting and thorough grape selection comes cold maceration and controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. The wine then ages for approximately 22 months in French oak barrels, which gives it complexity, nobility and perfectly integrated notes of wood.
Taste and aroma: The aroma is deep and complex, with notes of ripe black fruit such as blackberries, blackcurrant and plums, complemented by cocoa, tobacco, sweet spice, vanilla and delicate toasty nuances. On the palate the wine is full, powerful and yet elegant, with a firm structure, fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity and a very long, layered finish.
Food pairing: Recommended serving temperature 16–18 °C. An ideal partner for game, long-braised meats, lamb, beef steaks, bold meat dishes and mature cheeses such as Zamorano. Also suitable for cellaring and festive occasions.
