Dominio de Pingus, Pingus 2018, D.O. Ribera del Duero, red wine, 0.75l

The average product rating is 5,0 out of 5 stars. 1 rating

Pingus 2018 from the Dominio de Pingus winery represents the essence of modern Spanish winemaking excellence.
It is made from almost century-old Tempranillo bush vines in the village of La Horra in the Ribera del Duero region, with extremely low yields and a consistently biodynamic approach.
The 2018 vintage was awarded 100 points by Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate), placing it among the most significant wines of its generation. Production is around just 6,000 bottles a year (in poorer years Pingus is sometimes not produced at all), making it an extremely limited and highly collectible wine.

In the glass it offers deep concentration of blackcurrant, blueberries and dark forest fruit. Gradually developing are mineral nuances, tones of vanilla, noble wood, herbs, spice and a delicate almond accent. Perfectly ripe tannins with an exceptionally long finish.

Pingus 2018 is not just a wine. It is an investment, a rarity and an exceptional experience for those seeking the absolute pinnacle of world winemaking. It is meant for those who want to own something truly exceptional.

Grape variety: 100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino)

Vineyard:
Pingus 2018 comes from two historic plots in the village of La Horra: Barroso and San Cristóbal, with a total area of approximately 4-4.5 ha. The vineyards were planted mostly in 1929 and consist of very old, low-yielding Tempranillo bush vines. Yields are around 12-15 hl/ha, well below the region's usual appellation limit.
Since 2000, farming has followed biodynamic principles, with an emphasis on manual work, strict grape selection and the fullest possible expression of terroir.

Ageing:
Pingus 2018 from the Dominio de Pingus winery is made from grapes of very old Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) bush vines from the village of La Horra in the Ribera del Duero region. Fermentation follows the traditional method and the wine then ages in small oak barrique barrels of approximately 225 litres. Mostly French oak is used, and the proportion of new barrels is very high (often most, or almost 100%, depending on the character of the vintage). Ageing usually lasts around 18 to 22 months, during which the wine is matured very gently, with minimal intervention and limited racking, to preserve the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.
Thanks to the extremely low yields (approx. 12-15 hl/ha) and high concentration of the grapes, the 2018 vintage has an exceptional ageing potential. It can age effortlessly for several decades. Even in its youth it appears complex, but reaches its full development after longer cellaring.

Taste and aroma:
Characterised by deep, concentrated aromatics with dominant tones of blackcurrant, blueberries and dark forest fruit. Mineral nuances gradually develop, along with tones of vanilla, noble wood, herbs, spice and a delicate almond accent, complemented by a specific hint reminiscent of mature cognac.
On the palate the wine is full-bodied, structured and harmonious, with perfectly ripe fruity tannins, remarkable depth and exceptionally long persistence.

Food pairing:
Pingus is a wine for exceptional occasions and high-level cuisine. It pairs with roasted or grilled beef (for example wagyu or a dry-aged steak), lamb saddle, game or long-reduced dark sauces. It also goes excellently with truffles, mature hard cheeses and dishes based on intense, concentrated flavour. Thanks to its structure and depth, it also holds its own as a standalone experience without food.
