Artadi, Viña el Pisón 2021, D.O.C. Rioja, red wine, 0.75l

Artadi El Pisón is a wine made from Tempranillo grapes from a vineyard planted in 1945 in Laguardia, at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level, on deep clay-limestone soils. This vineyard has been organically certified since the 2016 vintage. The average yield is 3,500 kg/ha. The grapes are hand-harvested into 15 kg crates and selected directly in the vineyard. After transport to the winery, the grapes ferment using indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats for 10-12 days, with daily foot-treading and light pumping-over. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, where it ages for 12 months. El Pisón is a wine with a pronounced mineral character. The nose is very elegant and complex, with delicate, subtle fruit that develops towards spicy tones. On the palate it retains this character, with an enveloping, smoother structure. We recommend serving it at a temperature of 16 °C and decanting it before drinking. It pairs best with meats, both light and dark, and game. The company Bodegas Artadi was founded in Laguardia in 1985 as "Cooperative Cosecheros Alaves" under the leadership of Juan Carlos López de Lacalle. It was an association of a group of growers who wanted to work together on a business project based on the winemaking heritage of the La Rioja Alavesa region. They wanted to prove that great wines could also be achieved through carbonic maceration, and they succeeded.  Artadi's history is bound up with the memory and stories of the people who helped found the winery and make it what it is today.
