Kalamity has long been one of the best and most sought after wines from the D.O.C. Rioja region, with each vintage rated at least 95 Parker Points. The unique harmony of four varieties - 48% Tempranillo, 48% Garnacha, 2% Viura and 2% Garnacha Blanca creates a one of kind wine that no red wine lover or collector should miss.
The vineyard of 3 hectares is located in Cárdenas (Rioja Alta) at an altitude of 580 metres, and its history dates back to 1903. The soil is clay and rich in iron. The second vineyard, which is 101 years old, is located in Elvillar (Rioja Alavesa) at an altitude of 600 metres and has a clay-rich, calcareous soil.
The best grapes from each parcel are selected and vinified separately in open vats, barrels and concrete eggs using local yeasts. After 12 months of ageing in 500 litre French oak barrels, blending takes place.
Kalamity is extremely complex on the nose, delivering a variety of dark berries, violet blossoms, a whiff of thyme and slight peppery notes. This aroma will evolve and deepen with age. The palate is sweetly mineral and slightly spicy with a long persistence.
Serve the wine at 16-18 °C. Excellent for pairing with red meats, braised ragu, game and strong cured meats.
The eye-catching name and label express Oxer’s love for Shakespeare. “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (Shame be to him who thinks evil of it) comes from the play “The Reign of King Edward the Third”.
