Skladem
Tartalo is an exceptional red wine from D.O.C. Rioja made from a blend of Tempranillo, Viura and Graciano grapes. Somo is a 0,7 hectare vineyard in Elvillar (Rioja Alavesa), dating back to 1920. It reaches an altitude of 600 metres and the soil is a calcareous clay with a high limestone content.
The best grapes from the old vines are hand-harvested and de-stemmed, followed by fermentation in open 1 000 litre vats and 500 litre French oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French barrels and a 600 litre, 47 mm thick Stockinger barrel. The wine remains
in oak barrels for 12 months.
The aroma of this wine brings notes of thyme, it is sweetly spicy with hints of leather in the background. Incredible structure and elegant taste. Expressive, fine-grained and velvety tannins are balanced by flavours of black cherry, blackberry and black plum with an extremely long and chalky finish. It has excellent potential for archiving.
Tartalo is recommended to be served at a temperature of 14-16 °C. We recommend serving it with mature cheeses, red meats, game and ragout.
Tartalo comes from the old Basque mythology that Oxer likes to escape into and which he tries to express in his wines and paintings. Tartalo is the name of an immensely powerful one-eyed Basque giant. The quote on the back label is from Norwegian painter Edvard Munch: "From my rotting body flowers grow and I am in them and that is eternity."
