At Roca, Esporreres, D.O. Montsant, red wine, 0,75l Intense cherry colour with distinct purple edges, red fruit aromas where wild strawberry stands out against a spicy background of vanilla and coconut. The palate is fresh with ripe and well-integrated tannins, in harmony with the alcohol and natural acidity of the wine. The wine is aged for 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels to give it a silky smooth texture.

From AT Roca's new vineyard in Montsant, just 170 km west of Barcelona in Catalonia, comes this light and refreshing red wine from the Grenache grape variety.

The grapes come from a vineyard that was planted in 1986, but dates back to the 13th century when the land was originally used by Carthusian monks for farming. The highest point of the field is 730 metres above sea level and the soil is nutrient-poor and well-drained shale soil. Because the vines are trying to feed themselves, they expend their energy solely on producing tasty grapes, not on growing long branches and green leaves. That is why the conditions here, in this harsh soil, are optimal for growing grapes.

Moreover, the field slopes to the north-east, so that only the afternoon sunlight hits it. This is an advantage in sunny and warm areas such as Montsant if you want to produce elegant and delicious red wine. And that's what AT Roca delivers.

The wine is aged for 12 months in 500 litre French oak barrels to give it a silky and round structure.

In the glass, red and dark berries dance around each other, with strawberries and blackberries standing out in particular. The palate shows hints of vanilla, coconut and spice from the barrel ageing, while the tantalising acidity underlines the freshness of the wine.

This wine is perfect for serving at 12-15 °C with spicy food, pork, duck or rabbit.
